Local archers on target at nationals

It was a nice way to travel and for what? Well, it was a strong way to end the 3D indoor archery season for the Battle River Archers, as they travelled to Fort St. John, B.C. April 6 to 8 for the national competition.

Well, it was a strong way to end the 3D indoor archery season for the Battle River Archers, as they travelled to Fort St. John, B.C. April 6 to 8 for the national competition.

The Battle River Archers along with other archers from Saskatchewan and Alberta took a bus to the 2012 Indoor 3D Canadian Championships and the local club returned with three national medals and some impressive finishes.

Tyson Mackrell won bronze in the male cadet compound division. Tyson had the best score after the first round earning 191 out of a possible 220 points. He had a solid round two, but struggled a bit in the third round and settled into third place finishing with a total of 768.

In the female cub compound category, Tawnie Kotyk captured bronze. Her scores were 162, 168, 132 and 129. It was Tawnie's strong second round that helped her stay in medal contention and win her first national medal.

Spencer Hepp was the other Battle River Archer to win bronze at nationals as he competed in the precub compound division and was consistent all weekend scoring 186, 182, 188 and 184.

Six other members of the Battle River Archers took aim at nationals. Shayln Fedler was fourth in the female cadet compound division. Raquel Hepp was fifth in the female bow hunter open division. Ross MacAngus was sixth in men's master over 50 class. Corbin Prescesky was ninth in precub compound division. In the largest category, Rodney Fedler was 21st while Larry Mackrell was 30th in the male bow hunter open event.

Other area archers who are not members of the Battle River Archers who competed in British Columbia. Brian Hawkins of Wilkie was fifth in the male bow hunter restricted division. The Landrie family competed including Bill, who was seventh in the male bow hunter open, Terence, who was 13th in the same division, Dalton, who was seventh in male cadet compound, Anson, who was fifth in male cub compound, Richard, who placed sixth in the men's master over 60 division and Lucas, who was fifth in male precub compound category.

Archers also competed last weekend in the Saskatchewan Archery Associations JOP and FITA provincial shoot. Results hadn't been posted at press time, but the Battle River Archers again came home with medals. Look for those results in next week's Regional Optimist.
