For both the Marysburg Royals and the Muenster Red Sox, no opponent this year has been as daunting as the weather.
Both teams have lost several games this season due to rain. Nevertheless, despite soggy fields, both were able to get on the diamond this past weekend, and with good results.
The Royals swept a home doubleheader against the Saskatoon Blue Jays on Sunday. They won the first game by a score of 5-0, with Dean Jaeb only giving up three hits in a complete game effort. Curtis Strueby and Marty Yeager led the way offensively with two hits apiece. The defence was solid and gave up no errors.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Royals' bats come alive in a 10-2 win. Braden Bauml led the way with a monster afternoon, tallying four hits, five RBIs and capping it off with a two-run homerun. Colin Bauml and Paul Strueby combined for a strong performance from the pitcher's mound.
The Royals currently sit at 7-2, first place in the Saskatoon Senior Baseball League. They haven't given up an earned run in 34 innings, a testament to strong pitching and defence.
"Hopefully we can start to get into some kind of rhythm in regards to playing some games," said manager Curtis Strueby. "It's been frustrating to say the least but, when we do play, we are playing well."
The Royals will be participating in the annual Big Moose Tournament this weekend, held in Kenosee and Carlyle. The team should be playing four games, provided the weather doesn't interject yet again.
The Muenster Red Sox took the field for a game on Sunday against the Melville Millionaires, but had to play in Melfort because the field in Muenster was too soggy. There was no scoring until the fifth inning, when a single run by Melville was answered by two from Muenster. Taylor Rueve hit a triple to drive in the two runs and put the Red Sox on top. Carter Frerichs pitched six and two-thirds innings and gave up only two hits. Devin Hinz recorded the final out and was credited with the save.
Muenster's next games are on June 29, when they will travel to Moose Jaw and Regina for two games. The Red Sox are currently tied for second place in the AA division of the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League with 14 points.
