A stellar summer of baseball continues to roll on for local teams.

Over the weekend both the Marysburg Royals and Muenster Red Sox continued their winning ways, with both teams among the elite in their respective leagues.

In the Saskatoon Senior Baseball League, the Royals sit in first place with a 9-3 record after a week that saw them win twice and lose once. Marysburg opened the week with a 3-2 loss on July 10 to the Saskatoon Stallions, but followed that up with a two-game sweep of the Saskatoon Smokin' Guns over the weekend in Marysburg.

The first game of the doubleheader was a laugher, a 13-2 win for the Royals in front of a large homecoming crowd. Colin Bauml threw a complete game and benefited from a strong defensive effort of only one error. The Royals were led offensively by a Brent Puetz home run, one of ten hits on the day.

In the second game the Guns jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of a solid pitching performance from Matt Kosteniuk. After the Royals scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, they loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh in time for Brent Puetz to come up to bat, where he delivered with a walk-off grand slam home run. Mathew Strueby was the winning pitcher for Marysburg and the defence gave up no errors.

The Royals will next take the field tomorrow at 9 p.m. against the Blue Jays in Saskatoon. Their next home game is this Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Saskatoon Outlaws.

With the provincial championships only a month away it seems as though the Royals have hit their stride.

As for the Muenster Red Sox, they traveled to Weyburn and Regina over the weekend in Midget AA Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League action. In the first game the Red Sox beat the Regina Pacers 9-6, with Carter Frerichs, Taylor Rueve and Cole Wiesner all pitching. The second game was in Weyburn against the league-leading Athletics and Muenster emerged with a resounding 10-3 victory. Devin Hinz and Tanner Syroteuk combined for the pitching victory, while Riley Zimmerman had a fantastic day at the plate. Zimmerman had three doubles and two triples on the day, sparking his team to two important wins. With a record of 12-3-1 the Red Sox sit in third place in the league, just behind the Northeast Red Sox and the Weyburn Athletics.
