Local horseshoe club members on the mark

It may look easy, and maybe it is. The members of the North Battleford Horseshoe Club sure made it look that way at the 2010 provincial tournament.

It may look easy, and maybe it is. The members of the North Battleford Horseshoe Club sure made it look that way at the 2010 provincial tournament.

A handful of locals were at Manitou Beach near Watrous July 24 and 25 for the annual provincial tournament and several brought plaques and cash prizes home with them.

Marg Kemp, the club's president, took first place in three events: the ladies' B event, ladies' B ringer event and ladies' B skins event.

Another triple winner from the Battlefords was Frank Ironstand. Ironstand was first in the men's 30 D event, men's D ringer event and the mixed doubles B event.

Ironstand's partner in the mixed doubles B event was Vern Bannerman. Along with the team win, Bannerman was first in the men's 30 B category.

Howard Weitzel competed in the A division and he came home with first place honours in the men's 30 A event and men's A ringer event.

Peter Dudek won the men's 30 C event and his wife Doreen was second in the ladies' 30 C event.

The final pitcher to mention from the local club was Clarence Drescher. He was second in the men's 30 B division.

The North Battleford Horseshoe Club continues with league play Wednesday nights and they host a sanctioned tournament as well as a fun tournament during Northwest Territorial Days.

Anyone and everyone are welcome and for those beginners afraid of these provincial champions, the new players are given a handicap to equalize the playing field.
