North Battleford's Mikaela York got her college running career off to a strong start with a fourth place finish last Saturday.
Competing for Lethbridge College, York led her Kodiak team to second place in the team scoring of the five kilometre cross-country event in Red Deer, Alta. The event was coh-osted by the Red Deer Lightning Track and Field Club and Red Deer College. The open women class was combined with competitors from the Alberta College Athletic Conference in the first Run Alberta Cross Country Series.
Overall, York was eighth among the 79 competitors with a time of 20 minutes and 57 seconds. However, among the 54 ACAC athletes she finished fourth, less than a minute behind the podium finishers, two from Grant MacEwan University and one from Concordia College.
York is in her first year at Lethbridge College studying exercise science and is receiving a scholarship to compete in cross-country running and track and field. She will race in three more races before the conference championships in late October and the Canadian college championships at Humber College in Ontario in November.
