It was a great weekend for some local basketball teams.
Over the weekend, a number of local high school basketball teams headed off to Regionals, including the 1A Girls' Regionals hosted at Lake Lenore School March 15-16.
Lake Lenore's first Regionals game was against St. Brieux on March 15.
"Lake Lenore started strong scoring in transition and shooting well from the outside to take a large lead going into halftime," said coach Curtis Strueby.
The second half of the game, Lake Lenore continued to show off their skills, winning 74-28.
In their second game against Herbert on March 16, the teams were very evenly matched, with the score at the end of the first quarter 16-13 for Lake Lenore.
"The second saw both teams struggle offensively in the first few minutes, however, Lake Lenore began to pound the ball inside and score from the paint," stated Strueby.
The score at half was 39-23 for Lake Lenore.
In the second half, Lake Lenore took command of the game, scoring early and often.
"The fourth quarter saw the game slow down. Herbert began to press midway through, however Lake Lenore was able to hold them off with some clutch outside shooting," said Strueby.
Lake Lenore won the game 76-47, claiming the title of Regional Champions.
Strueby was proud of how hard his team played against Herbert, saying the girls showed great team effort.
"We really spread our scoring out a lot and played really sound team defence," said Strueby. "Anything Herbert threw at us we managed to limit the damage."
The girls didn't let Herbert get any momentum during the game.
"We dictated the pace and forced them to try to play our game, and if you do that you will have success in any sport you play," said Strueby. "I was extremely happy with our effort and work ethic in that game."
Lake Lenore will go on to play at HOOPLA March 22-23 in Saskatoon.
The 1A Middle Lake girls, 1A Middle Lake and St. Brieux boys' teams and the 2A Wynyard girls' team will also go on to HOOPLA after winning at Regionals.
The 4A Humboldt boys' team placed fourth at Regionals and the 4A Humboldt girls placed third.
