Local teams have slid their best foot forward on curling sheets across the province and clashed with some of the best teams Saskatchewan has to offer.

In the SaskTel Northern Men's Playdown, Doug Horn represented the Battlefords in Nipawin last weekend. Horn fell behind 7-2 after four ends against Darrell McKee and couldn't recover in the team's first game.

Horn's rink dropped to the B event where they faced Corey Martens. This one was close all the way, but Martens scored three points in the eighth end and held on for the 8-5 win.

In the C event, Horn was one up heading into the 10th end against Trevor Ylioja and held the La Ronge team to just one point to force an extra end. Ylioja stole one point to knock Horn out of the tournament.

Horn's team included third Steven Pederson, second Brian Shutra and lead Ken Wood.

Robert Bakken also skipped a local area rink, as he, Brent Taylor, Trevor Gerein and Marlowe Rask curled out of the Unity Curling Club.

Bakken's first match was against Carl DeConinck Smith who was in the Tankard final last year in North Battleford.

Bakken's team lost 8-4 to the eventual A event winner.

In the B event, Bakken beat Rick Picard 9-6, but lost to Greg Tarasoff 12-8 after surrendering five points in the final two ends.

In the C event, the Unity rink beat Ylioja 9-5, but in the C event semifinal Shawn Joyce eliminated them with an 8-2 score.

The other team some local area curling fans would be familiar with was the Corey Martens rink, which curled in the Regional playdown in Battleford Jan. 13-15. Martens went 2-3 on the week and was eventually knocked out of the C event by Shawn Joyce.

In women's curling, the SaskPower Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts is underway in Humboldt.

Darlene Gillies of Humboldt lost her first round robin game Wednesday, but was back in action with two games Thursday and two more Friday before the playoff round began.

Gillies, who is teamed with Linda Kloschinsky, Wanda Heitt and Tracy Heidt lost to Meadow Lake's Robyn Silvernagle Wednesday.
