Local athletes enjoyed a very successful trip to Regina for the 2016 Provincial Track and Field Championships on Jun. 3-4.
In total athletes from around the region picked up eight gold medals, eight silver medals and 16 bronze medals.
Annaheim
Annaheim picked up a pair of medals as Bailey Stuckel collected silver in the junior girls 3000 metre event with a time of 11:37.01 and Lily Yungmann picked up a bronze medal in the junior girls pole vault event with a vault of 2.35 metres.
Colonsay
Colonsay athlete Payne Wylie was the lone athlete to medal for Colonsay School as he picked up a pair of medals with bronze in both the junior boys 200 metre event and the junior boys overall points competition as well.
Cudworth
Landon Kohle flew the flag for Cudworth as he was their lone medalist as he picked up a gold medal in the junior boys javelin event with a throw of 43.56m.
Humboldt Collegiate Institute
Humboldt Collegiate Institute’s Taylor Zwarych lead the way winning four medals with gold’s in the 80 metre hurdles, 100 metre, and 200 metre midget girls events to go along with a midget girls overall points bronze medal.
Makenzie Senko picked up a silver medal in the senior girls discus with a throw of 34.44 metres.
Thanks to the four medals and the many great results from HCI students, HCI was able to claim the 3A school points silver medal as well.
Kelvington
Kelvington saw three athletes medal at the championships as those athletes picked up four medals.
Ty Peterson lead the way for Kelvington as he picked up a pair of medals winning gold in the senior boys shot put event and silver in the senior boys discus event with throws of 14.79 metres and 40.42 metres respectively.
Kelvington also swept the top two steps of the junior girls tetrathlon event as Cassidy Evans edged out teammate Tanesha Novak for gold with scores of 2,148 and 2,092 respectively.
Lake Lenore
Lake Lenore saw great success at the provincial championships with three of their athletes picking up medals.
Shane Gerwing ran a solid race in the junior boys 100 metre hurdles event finishing with a time of 14.90 to pick up the silver medal.
Gerwing’s teammate Adam Gerwing picked up a silver medal of his own as he finished in second place in the senior boys tetrathlon event with a total score of 2,386 points.
Beth Prodahl rounded out the medal haul for Lake Lenore as she picked up a bronze medal in the senior girls 3000 metre event with a time of 11:10.37.
LeRoy
LeRoy picked up one medal at the championship as Mitchell McGrath collected silver in the junior boys javelin throw as he threw 43.10 metres.
Melfort
Melfort was another school who picked up medals from three athletes as Kayli Friesen-Weir picked up a bronze in the junior girls triple jump with a jump of 10.66 metres, Konnor Johnson picked up a bronze in the midget boys javelin with a throw of 40.23 metres and Curtis Glanville picked up a bronze medal in the senior boys 3000 metre event with a time of 9:38.75.
Middle Lake
Middle Lake’s Masson Altrogge picked up the schools lone medal as he ran a terrific 100 metre hurdles race finishing with a time of 14.42 to earn himself the gold medal.
Muenster
Muenster picked up a pair of medals in the javelin as Jenay Varga finished third in the junior girls event with a throw of 34.40 metres and Jordan Breker also picked up a bronze medal with a throw of 47.32 metres in the senior boys competition.
Naicam
Jenelle Sunderland was the lone medalist from Naicam as she picked up a pair of medals in junior girls events finishing in third place in both the discus and shot put with throws of 29.54 metres and 10.16 metres respectively.
Rose Valley
Micah Yobb picked up a bronze medal in the midget girls high jump event as she finished with a high of 1.49 metres.
St. Louis
Calvin Napope was the lone medalist from St. Louis and he made it count as he picked up a junior boys high jump gold medal finishing with a jump of 1.89 metres.
Viscount
Connor Tetzlaff grabbed a bronze medal is the midget boys high jump event finishing with a jump of 1.69 metres.
Wakaw
Wakaw athlete Jaedyn Rudichuk picked up the lone medal for Wakaw as she finished in third place in the midget girls shot put event with a throw of 10.67 metres.
Wynyard
Mary Latoski picked up Wynyard’s only medal at the provincial championships as she claimed silver in the midget girls 80 metre hurdles event finishing with a time of 12.97.
Horizon Central
Horizon Central picked up the senior girls 4x100 metre relay bronze medal with a time of 51.84.
As a result of all of the success enjoyed by Horizon Central athletes, the division finished the championships as the second best points producing division in the province and was the number one points producing division per 1000 students.
With the end of the track season high school athletics has now come to an end for the 2015-2016 school year as students turn their attention to the final few weeks of the school year.
