There was no surprise again when the Flin Flon Bombers were named the Source Embroidery Power Rankings top team once again.
The Bombers were 8-0-0-0 on the season and lost their first game Tuesday. That loss came in Yorkton, the second overall team.
The North Stars continue to make big moves in the rankings, they moved from the bottom third of the rankings to fifth last week and this week were ranked ninth. The reason the North Stars jumped so high was after the addition of Justin Waskewitch, who is on the list of who's hot this week. Waskewitch had two goals and four assists in two games.
In the Canadian Junior Hockey League's top 20 ranking, Flin Flon moved from third to second. The Melville Millionaires went from being unranked to eighth in the country. The Yorkton Terriers also found themselves on the list, again holding the 20 spot.
One of the best players for the Battlefords North Stars through the first seven games of the season was veteran defenceman Brody Luhning.
Luhning received some praise from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, as he was chosen as the defenceman of the week for Oct. 8 to 15.
He earned three points in three games during that span. He had five goals and five assists in seven games with the North Stars and is a guy who will be counted on to supply plenty of offence from the blue-liners.
When asked earlier in the season, North Stars' assistant coach Blair Atcheynum said that because of a strong group of defenceman they shouldn't have to overuse Luhning, but if they need to use him more he is definitely capable of doing that in his final season of junior hockey.
Other SJHL weekly award winners include Tad Kozun, Matt Hrynkiw and Dexter Bricker.
Bricker was the rookie of the week. He had three of the Nipawin Hawks' 11 goals in the game against Weyburn. He added an assist later in the week and now has five points in seven games.
Humboldt's goaltender Hrynkiw earned a shutout Friday against Estevan. He is now 5-2 on the season and dating back to last season is 27-5 in his last 32 starts in the SJHL.
Kozun of the Nipawin Hawks had three assists in one game and two goals and three assists in his other game last week. The most recent player of he week has three goals and nine assists in eight games.
