Brian Weisbrod of Lumsden is just days away from taking his place in the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, as the class of 2012 will be inducted Saturday.
Weisbrod played minor baseball in the Lumsden and in 1970, he attended a baseball school in Muenster and was selected to an All-Star team and chosen to go to Major League Baseball School in Oliver, BC.
Weisbrod was not only a great baseball player, but a builder as well as was an instrumental to baseball and the development of the game in his area of Saskatchewan.
The Lumsden product played with the Disley Cardinals from 1968 through 1995, in the Qu'Appelle Valley Baseball League. The Cardinals won the 1969 and 1973 league championship with Weisbrod on the roster.
In 1984, he was the QVBL Most Valuable Player and all-star pitcher. Three years later, he was the QVBL all-star shortstop. In 1988, Weisbrod was again the QVBL MVP and all-star pitcher. He won one MVP honour in the league once more before becoming the president of the league in 1972.
For 10 years he coached at all levels of minor baseball in Lumsden while playing five seasons with the Disley twilite team.
In 1995, Weisbrod made the transition to coaching girls' softball and won a league championship.
He served as president of Lumsden Minor Ball a director of the Saskatchewan Baseball Association and governor for two years.
Weisbrod also scouted for Doyle Baseball School where more that 1,000 players attended and $17,000 was raised towards local ball diamonds. In 1998 Weisbrod's project was to started an indoor baseball facility with Lionel Ruhr in Regina.
In 1999, he co-ordinated the Baseball Fans Dream Dinner in appreciation of the coaches where Ferguson Jenkins and Brian Doyle were guest speakers.
In 2002, he organized the Lumsden Cubs senior team and coached for three years.
Weisbrod remains a member of the Disley Old Timers and Moose Jaw Cardinals.
Weisbrod was instrumental in the development of the Disley ball diamonds, the repair and maintenance for years.
During his high school years Weisbrod was competitive in track and field winning numerous honours over the years.
He coached minor hockey, belonged to the Lumsden Curling Club, was a councillor of the RM of Disley and a board member of the Lumsden Heritage Home.
He lives with his wife Sherry, on an acreage south of Disley. They have 5 children and enjoy watching the girl's dance and the three boys play baseball with the Lumsden Cubs.
