March 1 1954 - After 39 combat missions without an injury Ted Williams returns to baseball and fractures his collarbone in a spring training mission. 1969 - New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle retires from Major League Baseball.

1954 - After 39 combat missions without an injury Ted Williams returns to baseball and fractures his collarbone in a spring training mission.

1969 - New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle retires from Major League Baseball. At the time he was third all-time in home runs with 536 and the Yankees all-time leader in games played with 2,401. Derek Jeter since has passed that mark with the Yankees.

1988 - Wayne Gretzky becomes the National Hockey League's all-time assist leader with his 1,050th assist passing Gordie Howe.

1927 - Babe Ruth signs a contract for $70,000 making him the highest paid MLB player at the time. The league minimum in MLB now is $480,000.

1936 - The first National Basketball Association all-star game is played in Boston. Team East beat Team West 111-94.

1962 - Wilt Chamberlain sets a single-game scoring record with 100 points in a game. His Philadelphia Warriors beat the New York Knicks 169-147.

1968 - Montreal's Jean Beliveau becomes the second NHLer to scored 1,000 points in a career. Beliveau retired in 1971 with 1,219 career points.

1941 - Chicago Blackhawks goalie Samuel LoPresti stops a record 80 of 83 shots against Boston in an NHL game. The Blackhawks lost the game 3-2 in regulation.

1995 - George Foreman is stripped of the WBA heavyweight boxing title after refusing to fight Tony Tucker. Foreman initially proposed a fight with Mike Tyson.

1985 - Mike Bossy becomes the first NHL player to scored 50 goals in eight consecutive seasons.

March 6

1972 - Jack Nicklaus passes Arnold Palmer as the Professional Golfer Association's all-time money winner.

1994 - Colin Jackson of Cardiff, Wales sets a 60m hurdles record with a time of 7.30 seconds and continued his winning streak which eventually ended in 1995 at 44 races.

1857 - It is decided nine innings constitutes and official baseball game not nine runs.

1982 - The National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournament Selection is televised live for the first time.

1996 - Magic Johnson of the los Angeles Lakers becomes the second NBA player to reach 10,000 career assists. He finished his career with a mark of 11.2 assists per game.
