1978 - The San Diego Padres fired manager Al Dark. He was the second manager ever to be fired during Major League Baseball's spring training season.
1994 - Wayne Gretzky tied Gordie Howe's National Hockey League record of 801 goals. Gretzky finished his career with 894 goals in 240 less games played than Howe.

1923 - Foster Hewitt's voice is heard during the first radio broadcast of an ice hockey game.
1934 - The first Masters Tournament started at Augusta, Ga. Horton Smith went on to win the inaugural event. The tournament was named the Augusta National Invitational until 1939.
1979 - The NHL votes to accept four teams from the World Hockey Association. Those were the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques and Hartford Whalers.

1957 - North Carolina beats Kansas 54-53 in triple overtime in the 19th National Collegiate Athletic Associations men's basketball final.
1994 - Graeme Obree sets a world record after cycling 10km in 11:28.
March 24
1975 - Muhammad Ali knocks out Chuck Wepner in 15 rounds to reclaim his heavyweight title. It was reported that Ali was guaranteed $1.5 million for the fight while Wepner was signed for $100,000.
March 25
1982 - Wayne Gretzky becomes the first NHL player to record 200 points in a season. He finished the year with 212 in 80 games. Gretzky would go on to have three more seasons with 200 or more points.
March 26
1917 - Seattle Metropolitans of the PCHA become the first American team to win the Stanley Cup after beating the NHL's Montreal Canadiens three games to one.
1975 - The Washington Capitols play an NHL record 37th road game without a win. It was also the Capitols 17th straight loss.
March 27
1962 - Montreal Canadien goalie Jacques Plante ties a league record with his sixth Vezina Trophy. Bill Durnan a former Canadien had also won it six times and Dominik Hasek won six times with the Buffalo Sabres. Plante would win his seventh Vezina in 1969 and holds the record.
