MELFORT — The Melfort Mustangs won their first regular game of the season against the Flin Flon Bombers.

At the Sept. 24 game in Melfort, the Mustangs won 5-2.

Melfort took control early, getting two goals in the first four minutes of the game from Curtis Hammond and Seth McCullouch. Mason Kaspick cut the lead to one with a powerplay goal for the Bombers moments later, but that two-goal Mustangs lead was restored midway through the period through a goal by Dawson Leroux.

Boston Maxwell stretched the lead out to 4-1 Melfort halfway through the second period. Cole Duperreault countered with his first goal as a Bomber, but that was as close as the Bombers would get. McCulloch scored a second goal late in the third to ice a Mustangs victory.

The win went to Melfort goalie Joel Favreau, who had a light night in the Mustangs net, making 27 stops. Bomber netminder Cal Schell took the L in his first game in almost a year, making 33 saves in a losing effort.

The two teams will hit Highway 106 for a return date Saturday night, the Bombers' home opener and first home game in nearly a year. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
