Michael Phelps has won eight medals during one Olympic swimming event, twice, but Alex Anderson Callbeck passed that mark while she competed in the Saskatchewan Summer Games.
Alex, is still too young to drive, but she returned from Meadow Lake to the Battlefords with almost enough hardware to melt into a small car. The 14-year-old swam her way to 10 medals in just a few days.
She clinched gold in the 50m butterfly and 400m freestyle, silver in the 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley. Her individual bronze medal came in the 100m backstroke.
Alex also anchored the 4 x 50m medley relay team and 4 x100m medley relay team to silver medals and the 4 x 50m freestyle relay team to a bronze.
Along with her 10 medals Alex set a new record in the 400m freestyle, which was previously set in 1976.
Along with her dominating and memorable performance Alex's swimming mates on the Rivers West team earned three other gold medals and three bronze medals.
The 16 medals won in the pool have helped put Rivers West into fifth in the overall medal standings. Rivers West had 27 medals in total going into action Thursday, as they won eight gold, eight silver and 11 bronze medals.
Unity's Blake Robertson and Frenchman Butte's Layne Young helped the baseball team to a gold medal. Team Rivers West lost their first round robin game to Regina, but went on to win over Prairie Central and Lakeland. In the semifinal River West beat Saskatoon 11-9 to set up a rematch Wednesday with Regina. Rivers West scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 8-6.
The other gold medals were won by Brendan Plant on the golf course and the male golf team which included Brendan, Kyle Weibe and Diehl Normand.
Rivers West also won silver medals in canoeing and kayaking.
The Canoeing/kayaking team also contributed three bronze medals while tennis doubles, and golf were the events that earned the remainder of the medals.
