Midget pick strikes silver

After what was a bit of a struggle this season for the midget aged baseball players from the Battlefords, one of them found a silver lining.

Joey Carriere, who played in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League during the regular season with the Unity Midget A's was picked up for the Western Canadian Midget AA Championship in Morden, Man.

After Carriere and the A's hosted AA provincials in North Battleford, but lost in the semi final, Swift Current went on to win the provincial title. Carriere, the left-handed pitcher and first baseman, was asked to join Swift Current for this past weekend of baseball.

The Swift Current Indians started the weekend with a 14-7 win over the B.C. representative and an 8-4 win over the host Morden team on Friday.

Saturday, Swift Current beat the Alberta representative 10-8 to improve to 3-0.

Sunday, it was already determined Swift Current and the Manitoba representative would play in the final, but before that the teams had to play a round robin game in the morning.

Swift Current won 6-5 and would go into the championship game undefeated.

Swift Current held a six-run lead in the final, but that evaporated and Manitoba went on to win 11-8.

Carriere and his Swift Current teammates had a gold medal pulled from their grip, but finishing the season with a silver medal at Western Canadians is something most ball players would be proud to hang their hat on.
