Midget Stars cruise by Beardy's

It took awhile for the Battlefords Midget Stars to pulled away from the Beardy's Blackhawks in Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League action when the teams played Thursday at the Civic Centre.

Eventually, the Stars improved to 18-14-5-1 on the season while the Blackhawks are stuck at two wins and lost 15 games straight.

The game's first goal was scored with 56 seconds left in the first period, as Regan Yew was set up for his 15th goal of the season from Austin Duzan and Ashton Clark.

Beardy's tied the game a minute and half into the second period when Reed Gunville beat Ryan Rewerts in the Stars' net.

Six minutes later, the Stars starting scoring and really didn't stop the rest of the night, as they scored seven unanswered goals.

Kent Walchuk scored from Spencer Bast and Layne Young for his eighth of the season. Brian Hillis scored his first of three goals with Josh Bly earning an assist and Clark scored on a power play from Yew and Eric Pfeifer for his eighth of the season.

After two periods, the hometown Stars led 4-1 and outshot the Blackhawks 29-20.

The Stars scored three quick goals to start the third period, as Duzan scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season shorthanded from Yew. Hillis scored two goals shortly after that including a shorthanded marker. The other, his fifth goal of the season, was assisted by Ryan Frehlick.

Bly scored with two minutes left from Braden Lacoursiere to seal the 8-1 win. Bly has 14 goals on the season and leads the team with 37 points.

Rewerts made 27 saves for 12 wins on the season.

The Stars have another mid-week game this week, as they will face the second place Saskatoon Contacts Wednesday at the Civic Centre. On the weekend, the Stars will wrap up their home portion of the regular season against the Notre Dame Hounds. Following this weekend, the Stars will have road games in Prince Albert and two in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Argos to end the regular season.
