There was a chill in the air and the players wore toques, but the cold and the rain didn't stop the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) senior boys' soccer team from claiming the regional championship title this past weekend. The HCI Mohawks came away with two wins in the SHSAA event the high school hosted at Glenn Hall Park.Their first game was against the Martensville Royals on October 19. The Mohawks kept the play near the Royals' goal for most of the game, putting the ball into the net again and again, while the visiting team couldn't retaliate. This earned the Mohawks a shutout game with a score of 11-0, and gave them the points they needed to qualify for the Provincial Championships.Mohawks' coach Brent Loehr and former assistant coach Carlos Correia stood together on the sidelines and marvelled at how well the team has performed this season. The next day, the Mohawks faced the Warman Wolverines in a game that would determine their seeding for Provincials. Again, HCI came out on top, defeating the visiting team 2-1, but the home team had to work a little harder for its second win.The score was tied 1-1 after regulation time.It remained tied after overtime, and it was only in a shootout that the Mohawks managed to capture the deciding goal that boosted them into the number one seed for the area. The Mohawks travel to Warman to play in the 2A Boys' SHSAA Provincial Championships, October 26 and 27. Eight teams will be battling it out for the Provincial title over the two days.
