The village of Muenster will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in the community category Aug. 16 in Battleford.
In July of 1906, Muenster had their first ever town picnic. Ball games were the main attraction of a worry-free day as far as many of the surrounding farmers can attest. In the long summer months, it seemed boys young and old wanted to play baseball. In 1907, baseball was the first team sport organized by Muenster to play against neighbouring communities. Boys' baseball was formally organized in 1909 in Muenster. The first recorded games played by Muenster boys were against the nearby town of Lanigan and Muenster came out as the winners.
Muenster ranged from an average to a very good baseball team over the years. Teams from the surrounding area were always competitive. Over the last few years, Muenster's peewee and bantam teams have entered the Saskatoon AAA Leagues, and their midget team entered into the Saskatchewan Premier Midget Baseball League. Although this has been a huge commitment to families, it has helped players pursue their goal of a provincial title.
Since 1986, when the Saskatchewan Baseball Association began with the format of a provincial championships, Muenster teams have won 23 provincial titles and one Western Canadian championship. These banners are proudly hanging in the "pole shed," located next to Muenster Jubilee Memorial Stadium. The building was built in 2007 and has a kitchen, washrooms and seating area to watch ball games. It was erected and funded by community volunteers. This building, as well as Muenster's baseball park, is the envy of many visitors to the community.
Muenster has successfully hosted many provincial championships as well as a Senior Western Championship in 2009. These events are always supported with a great number of fans and volunteers.
Muenster has proven to be a baseball hot bed. It developed with the sport early and it still prospers with the sport. The memories that have been created through baseball to members of the community could never be forgotten and are incomparable to most memories that are not oriented with baseball. People from Muenster and the surrounding area will always remember that Muenster was, and still is, a proud baseball town. Players who played with or against Muenster Red Sox players of all ages will have thoughts of, "Man those guys could hit, and man did those guys ever play hard."
These thoughts are instilled into anyone who saw a Red Sox player play, and if by some chance you never saw them play, you heard about the town and how baseball is their sport.
