One of the many things participants learned at the World's Largest Swimming Lesson was rescuing someone struggling in the water.

The new Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre has been busy since it opened, like Monday morning when 37 people came out for a swimming lesson.

People of all ages flooded into the aquatic centre, but it wasn't just because they wanted to learn to swim, it was so they could be part of a world record.

All across the globe water bugs dove in to break the record of 24,873 participants for the world's largest simultaneous swimming lesson.

The record, set last year, had contributions from 15 different countries spanning five continents.

While the record-breaking is a goal, the main purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the importance of kids having the ability to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children aged one to 14 according to the World's Largest Swimming Lesson website.

The event started with a standard 30-minute lesson at over 700 locations world-wide. Participants were divided into three groups based on age, and received instruction like they would in any swimming lesson.

Each host for the event had to send in a form filled out by two independent witnesses verifying the number of participants. Over 35,000 swimmers were expected to take part.
