Rivals John Paul II and NBCHS went head-to-head in the tournament at John Paul II last weekend. They will both be playing at regionals at John Paul II this weekend competing for berths in provincials.

The last volleyball tournament before regionals, which took place last weekend at John Paul II, left North Battleford Comprehensive High School in a very good mood.

That's because the senior boys' and senior girls' teams from NBCHS both took gold medals home. The girls will also be back at J.P. II this weekend for regionals.

For the boys, the victory was a capstone on an excellent season. They went undefeated in the tournament to take home the gold in the final against Rosthern Junior College, dropping only one set in the entire tournament.

To head coach Bruce Friesen, the boys' good showing bodes well for the future of the team.

"There were times where we didn't play our best ball, but we had enough to persevere and win some of those close ones. Even when we weren't playing our best we still managed to come out on the right side of things."

For the girls, the tournament was a "great preview for this upcoming weekend," in the words of senior girls head coach Britt Rumpt. Their team finished second in the round robin, only to defeat Melfort in two straight sets for the gold.

Of course, provincial championships are on the radar of both teams right now. They will take place at NBCHS Nov. 16 and 17 for the boys. Friesen states that he is looking at the upcoming tournament quite positively.

"We should have a pretty good chance. I'd ideally like to finish top two this weekend. We're going to have to play well to do that, but we've shown signs that we can compete with those top teams and we should be able to get there."
