Despite the frigid temperatures, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School's cross-country running team competed at the Battle West District meet in Spiritwood Oct. 4.
Due to the late start to the school year, the cross-country running season was short this year. Before the district meet, the team only had three meets at Unity, Wilkie and Biggar. and now the team only has one more meet until the season comes to an end.
NBCHS had five students competing at Spiritwood, and all five will be advancing to provincials next week.
Mikaela York and Taisley Isaac were in the senior girls' category. In the four km run York placed first, and Isaac came in second. This is the third year in a row York won the district champion. Last year she won the race despite having had major knee surgery just over three months prior to the race. She finished 13th at provincials last season.
In the senior boys' category, Brendan Grosjean came in first and Jason Reimer in fifth in their six km run.
Emma Young competed in the junior category. She ran four km and placed fourth in her race.
These students hope to bring their best to the provincial meet Saturday.
"I'm really hoping for top 10, but if I don't this isn't the end of my season, much less my years of running. I'll keep going because it's something I love." says York.
York has been running long distance for ten years and although she is in Grade 12, she hopes to continue competing at higher levels.
Due to their excellent performance, these five students will be competing in provincials just outside of Regina, and they hope that their hard work and determination will lead them final results.
