NBCHS students wrestle their way to provincials

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School wrestling team participated in the Rural Regional Wrestling Championships in Swift Currant Saturday and now some from NBCHS have their eye on provincials.

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School wrestling team participated in the Rural Regional Wrestling Championships in Swift Currant Saturday and now some from NBCHS have their eye on provincials.

Cole Omelchenko, Brendan Elliot, Erica Landrie and Taisley Isaac were all first in their weight categories while Schalk-Willem Engelbrecht earned a silver medal. Other NBCHS participates at the regional tournament were Pita Tuiloma, Taylor Reiley, Taylor Thomas, Liam Burns, Anna Close and Shea O'Bertos.

Omelchenko won two matches to earn his gold. Elliot won his only match. Landrie had to battle her way through three matches for first place. Isaac fought her way to a 1-1 record.

Engelbrecht won three out of his four matches for a silver medal. Tuiloma and Reiley both won four of their six matches. Thomas won one and lost two matches. Burns and Close lost both of their matches and O'Bertos was 1-3.

As a school overall, both the girls' and boys' teams placed third in the region.

Regionals is a stepping stone for wrestlers to qualify for provincials. The top four wrestlers from each category advance to provincials, which take place this weekend in Saskatoon.

From NBCHS Omelchenko, Elliot, Landrie, Isaac, Engelbecht and Tuiloma will be participating in the 2011 provincial championship.

Approximately 120 girls and 170 boys, who qualified through city championships in Saskatoon and Regina as well as the rural championship in Swift Current, will be competing at Tommy Douglas.
