Chief Poundmaker competed in the 1A boys' provincial championship in North Battleford on the weekend. Poundmaker went on the attack late in the first half and built up a lead against Osler in the bronze medal game Saturday, but that lead evaporated late in the second half, as they settled for fourth place, as the host team.

Both John Paul II soccer teams competed in provincials on the weekend, the girls in Regina and boys in Yorkton.

The boys met up with some strong competition first losing 13-1 to Moose Jaw Central, who went on to win bronze, and later the Crusaders lost to Regina Miller 7-2.

They had a bit better fate winning their first game 1-0 over Regina O'Neill to advance to the semi finals.

In the semis, John Paul II lost 6-3 to Notre Dame.

After dropping to the bronze medal game the Crusaders couldn't get their offence going and lost 3-0 to Yorkton Sacred Heart finishing in fourth place overall.

In the Battlefords, Chief Poundmaker hosted 1A boys' provincials and all four games were exciting and close despite the cold temperatures Saturday.

Poundmaker, which is combined with Little Pine, lost the first game of the tournament 2-1 to Regina Christian in penalty kicks. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and nothing changed after overtime. On the ninth round of the shootout, Regina Christian finally broke the tie and won 2-1. Roberto Weenie was the goal scorer for Poundmaker.

After Lake Lenore beat Osler 2-1 in the other semi final, Poundmaker faced Osler Saturday for the bronze medal.

Unlike the semi finals there was plenty of offence, but again it was a one-goal game.

Jon Boncuse and Tim Tootoosis scored twice for Poundmaker while Mookie Bonase and Trey Checkness scored once.

Poundmaker surrendered three late goals in the second half and lost 7-6 after leading heading into the second half.

In the gold medal game, a goal mid-way through the second half was the difference, as Lake Lenore beat Regina Christian 1-0.

The other team, planning to attend provincials from the Northwest was Cando, but after a situation at regionals the weekend before with the officials, Cando's spot was filled by Rosthern, who finished third at regionals and went on to take silver at provincials in Moose Jaw.
