The Battlefords North Stars were looking strong defensively, but after Kyle Schmidt was recalled by the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League and Cody Bird went home to Wainwright, the team has been searching for more depth on defence.
They addressed that Wednesday, as the North Stars acquired Joren Johnson from the Trail Smoke Eaters.
Johnson played 29 games last season and 19 this season with the Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League. He had seven assists and 36 penalty minutes in the previous two seasons.
For the 18-year-old defenceman the North Stars will send future considerations to the Smoke Eaters.
The North Stars are now carrying seven defenceman and 13 forwards. Johnson should join the team early next week.
