The Battlefords North Stars will be on the ice Saturday, but before that they will be in the kitchen.

The players will be creating gingerbread houses, which will be on display and available in a silent auction at the Civic Centre during the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League game against the Weyburn Red Wings.

All of the proceeds from the auction will be going to a special cause.

Jeff Olson was a hockey player who spent time playing with the Battlefords Midget AAA Stars. He was a player several North Stars had the pleasure of calling a teammate during his hockey career and was a prospect of the Battlefords North Stars until a tragic motor vehicle accident this summer.

The North Stars are pleased to make a contribution to a project that has been started in Olson's memory. The team learned the outdoor rink across from Olson's home in Kindersley was one of his favourite places. This is where he learned to skate, played countless hours of shinny with family and friends, blew off steam and worked towards another hockey season.

Olson always felt the rink should be used year round, saying it would be great if there was cement for ball hockey, basketball or other activities. He thought it would give older kids a place to go.

Starting in the spring of 2013, his wish will come true thanks to generous donations. Olson's family and friends plan to cement the arena, and depending on funds, possibly make other upgrades as well.

By purchasing a gingerbread house created by the North Stars, you will help to reach this goal. You can also make a contribution to the memorial project, by purchasing a Jeff Olson wrist band at Shared Secrets at 1482-100th St. in North Battleford.
