Jordan Ethier scored fires home a shot in the second period Friday night, as the North Stars took on the Nipawin Hawks at the Civic Centre.

It was just their luck that the Battlefords North Stars had to face two hot teams over the weekend.

Unfortunately, the North Stars weren't able to put an end to either the Nipawin Hawks' or Humboldt Broncos' winning streaks and now have a two-game losing streak of their own to show for it.

It was the Hawks that came in to the Civic Centre Friday and handed the North Stars a 5-3 beating at home. For Nipawin it was their sixth straight win.

Then, in a crucial first-versus-second showdown on the road Sunday, the North Stars lost to an even hotter Humboldt Broncos squad 1-0.

It was the Broncos 16th win in a row, a win streak that saw the Broncos swoop past the North Stars in the Bauer Conference race in recent weeks. The loss dropped the North Stars seven points back of the Broncos in the race for the Bauer conference lead.

The Friday night game was played without Travis Sparrow in the lineup, he was serving the final game of a four-game suspension before returning for Sunday's game in Humboldt.

The Friday game was the first for new North Stars Mitch Berg and Klay Kachur after being acquired at the trade deadline from the Melfort Mustangs and Westside Warriors (BCHL) respectively.

In the game against Nipawin, the North Stars took an early 1-0 lead on the power play, as Brody Luhning scored his 10th of the season from Woody Klassen and Jordan Ethier.

But Justin Waskewitch tied it at 1-1 from Adam Reichert and Wheaton King at 14:59, also on the power play.

Jesse Bernard gave the Hawks the lead 2-1 just 1:20 into the second but Dillon Forbes answered back with one of his own at the 2:02 mark.

Mitch Doell gave the Hawks the lead again at the 13:07 mark on the power play, but with Stuart Holland in the box for a four-minute for high sticking penalty, Ethier scored with five seconds left in the period to tie it at 3-3.

That would be all the scoring for the North Stars on the night, though, as Wheaton King at 7:07 and Keenan Martens on the power play at 11:39 rounded out the scoring for the Hawks. The final frame was also livened up by a fight between Robbie Newton and Ben Petros midway through the period.

The North Stars outshot Nipawin 28-19 on the night. Graham Hildebrand took the loss while Davis Jones got the win for the Hawks.

It proved to be another sad night for the North Stars Sunday. Once again, they were facing a red-hot opponent.

The game proved tight most of the way, with no scoring until the third period when Emrik Guillemette scored from Andrew Johnston and Jonathan Parisien, at the 12:23 mark of the final period.

Again, the North Stars outshot their opponents 27-18, but came up short as Matt Hrynkiw got the win in net for the Broncos. Connor Creech took the loss for the North Stars.

The schedule didn't promise to get any easier Tuesday as the North Stars were set to host the defending league champion La Ronge Ice Wolves.
