The North Stars entertained their families on the weekend, not only on the ice, but off it as well, as it was the team's annual parents and billets weekend.
On the ice Sunday, the North Stars entertained the fans with one of their more complete efforts of the season besides the penalty kill, where Yorkton capitalized on four of eight power plays. The Terriers are third overall in the SJHL on the power play and second on the road at 29.5 per cent.
The North Stars went into the Sunday game with some momentum from a 3-2 loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
The reason the North Stars had momentum, or perhaps just more determination after that loss, was because they trailed the Ice Wolves 3-0 with 46 seconds left to play. The North Stars' Braedan Johnson scored from Jake McMillen and Justin Waskewitch to break the shutout. Seconds later, Kyle Hall was credited with a goal that was scored on a mad scramble around the La Ronge net. La Ronge's goaltender Myles Hovedbo got in the referee's face after the second goal and received a game misconduct with 10 seconds to play. The North Stars couldn't generate one last scoring chance, but definitely had something to build off of.
They didn't play a bad game Friday, but La Ronge counted on a good goaltender and focused on keeping the North Stars' attack on the perimeter. La Ronge also capitalized on North Stars' mistakes and forced a large number of turnovers that led to a goal in each of the three periods.
Sunday, the North Stars trailed 1-0 in the game, but went into the first intermission tied 1-1 after Austin Evans scored his third goal of the season from Spencer Gosselin and Brody Luhning.
The North Stars outshot the Terriers 10-4 through the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, the North Stars took the lead when Evans scored his second of the game from Luhning.
Tyler Giebel evened the score again, as the Terriers scored on a late power play.
In the third period, the North Stars outscored Yorkton 4-2 and earned the 6-4 win, their second against the Terriers this season. It was also a big win that helped move the North Stars from sixth in the Bauer Conference to fourth.
In the third period, Waskewitch scored four minutes in to put the North Stars ahead and Gosselin assisted on the power play marker. Gosselin also got in on the scoring with his fourth of the season three minutes later.
Hall and Johnson set up Brandon Long and his sixth goal held up as the game-winner.
Rookie Josh Betinol sealed the game with and empty net goal with three seconds left.
Connor Creech started both games for the North Stars, while Midget Stars goalie Ryan Rewerts dressed as the backup for both games. Casey Parker was not dressed due to illness.
The North Stars improved to 7-8-0-0, with six of those wins coming against just three teams, Melville, Notre Dame and Yorkton.
The North Stars were on home ice again Tuesday against the Humboldt Broncos.
Up next for the North Stars is a northern road trip that includes a game in Flin Flon Friday and La Ronge Saturday.
