The Battlefords North Stars will be without two of their players during their upcoming home games and possibly longer, as forwards Blake Young and Jake McMillen will be in Calgary at the Canada West Selection Camp.
Young and McMillen are among the seven Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League players who will be battling for spots on the team to compete in the World Junior A Challenge held Nov. 4 to 10 at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S. The selection camp runs from Saturday until Wednesday.
Both North Stars are in their second season with the team. Young has five goals and four assists in 12 games and McMillen has four goals and two assists in 10 games.
"Young and McMillen are both very deserving candidates for Team Canada West," said North Stars head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg. "We eagerly anticipate the outcome of the camp and believe both players can contribute to winning gold for Canada West."
Players named to the Canada West selection camp roster were selected from the Canadian Junior Hockey League's five western Junior A leagues in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Superior International Junior Hockey League.
"There is tremendous talent in Canada's five western Junior A leagues, and it was a challenge to select only 66 to invite," said Jason McKee, head coach of Canada West and Spruce Grove of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. "We're excited for the potential of this group, and we can't wait to get on the ice in Calgary and choose the 22 who will wear the red and white in Yarmouth."
