Northwest students head to badminton provincials

Six students from the Northwest will be participating in the Provincial High School Badminton Championships Saturday in Warman. Trace Sperle and Mark Ganter from Unity are one of the eight teams to qualify for the boys' double tournament.

Six students from the Northwest will be participating in the Provincial High School Badminton Championships Saturday in Warman.

Trace Sperle and Mark Ganter from Unity are one of the eight teams to qualify for the boys' double tournament. Sperle and Ganter qualified for provincials after beating the team from Hillmond 2-0 in the semi-finals. The team from Unity lost to the team from Evan Hardy Collegiate of Saskatoon in the regional final.

Two teams from the area qualified for the girls' double tournament. Kylie McDaid and Santanna Bill from Leoville and Allison Cey and Chelsea Gruber from Wilkie advanced to their regional finals to make it to provinicals. McDaid and Bill downed Cey and Gruber 2-0 to win the regional championship.

These groups will be part of the 64 student athletes competing at the provincial championships at Warman High School. The provincial champions will be determined in boys' singles, girls' singles, boys' doubles, girls' doubles and mixed doubles.

Round robin play begins at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Playoffs will be contested in the afternoon.
