Peewee Barons scrap out game one win

After beating Prince Albert in the first provincial series and edging Humboldt in the second series, the Peewee AA Barons needed overtime to advance to a 1-0 series lead in the Centre Four Hockey League provincial final.

The winner of the series between the Barons and West Central will advance to the provincial bracket and play in the northern final against the Saskatoon representative.

The Barons won 4-3 in overtime in game one of the best of three series Feb. 11. The Barons sit fourth in the Centre Four Hockey League regular season standings while West Central are first.

Game 2 of the provincials takes place in Kindersley versus West Central on Wednesday while Game 3 if needed would be Friday.

Meanwhile, back in league action the Barons took on Humboldt in a makeup league game in Drake, Saskatchewan on Friday night and won 5-2.

Barons got one from Brandon Lesko in the first, the Broncos tied it in the second, and then the Barons exploded for four goals in the third with Blake Fennig, Gavin Nolin, Lesko and Jared Schmidt all scoring. Broncos also got a goal in that period to make the finale 5-2 for the Barons.

Then on Sunday the Barons were back in action in Battleford against the Tisdale Ramblers. This contest proved to be even more one-sided in the Barons' favor as they stomped Tisdale 11-1.

Two goals in the first by Lesko got things rolling, with Nolin and Clarke also notching first period markers. Owen Lamb scored two and Blake Fennig scored one in the second, and then it was goals by Fennig, Nolin, Lamb and Coleb Biensch to round out the scoring for the Barons.

Midget scores

In AA female midget action the Biggar Nationals completed a two-game sweep of the Battlefords Sharks. Biggar defeated the Sharks by scores of 5-1 and 7-1 and now move on to meet West Central Wheat, who beat the Saskatoon Comets by 4-1 and 2-1 counts to move on.

Midget A action saw the Battlefords take on Biggar, with the home Sharks losing by a 7-0 count on Sunday to close out the regular season.
