Larry Orth was born April 11, 1950, in Esterhazy and started his baseball career in 1961 and continues today.
During the 50 years, Orth has contributed to the game of baseball in many local areas as a player, a coach, manager, umpire, umpire clinician, umpire mentor and administrator. As well, he contributed greatly at regional and national levels with Baseball Canada and as director of the national association.
As a player, Orth played his minor ball in Langenburg for 11 years.
In 1972, Orth was an assistant coach for the Langenburg sandlot team.
From 1973 to '83 he played senior baseball with the Watrous Lakers.
During his time as a senior baseball player, Orth also took on the role as assistant coach of the Watrous mosquito team and was the head coach in 1988.
The next two seasons, Orth coached the Watrous peewee team and once got his team to the provincial final.
Orth continued with his coaching moving up to the bantam team in Watrous in 1991 and '92.
In 1988 to '04, Larry played twilite with the Lockwood Braves in the over 35 maxi level.
He also suited up for the Braves for two seasons at the masters level.
Orth began umpiring in 1982 in minor and senior baseball, and remains an SBA registered umpire, and continues working the minor leagues.
In 1992, he umpired the Saskatchewan Summer Games in Prince Albert. Two years later, Orth umpired at the National Bantam Championships in Kelowna, B.C. He also umpired at the Canada Cup in Stonewall, Man.
He attained level three and National level four umpire status. Larry also attained Nationally Certified Senior Course Conductor status.
Since 1992, Larry has conducted umpire clinics in the province.
Since 2007, he has been a member of the Louis Slotsve Mentorship Program in Saskatoon.
In administration, Orth participated and contributed to numerous events as a committee member, an organizing host and an umpire director.
He held numerous positions in baseball organizations as director, president, vice-president, chairman and supervisor.
He was a director of Baseball Canada in 2008 and '09, and from 2008 to the present is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, and was Chef de Mission for Saskatchewan Teams at National Championships 7 times.
Orth was the recipient of Zone 5 Sports Leadership Award for his contribution to umpiring.
He also was the recipient of the1994 Sask Baseball Senior Umpire of the Year Award.
Larry Orth will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame at the 27th annual induction ceremony Aug. 20.
