It took four games, but the Estevan Bruins pulled off the upset in the Sherwood Conference Survivor series and will advance to the conference semifinals against Yorkton.

Like the Melfort Mustangs in the Bauer Conference, the Bruins in the Sherwood were the fifth overall team and will advance to play the top team in their conference.

With eight teams remaining, the next round will start Friday and feature the Humboldt Broncos up against Melfort, Nipawin and Flin Flon will face off, Yorkton will play Estevan and Melville takes on Notre Dame.

The SJHL also announced the winners of the Coach of the Year honour. Yorkton's Trent Cassan and Humboldt's Dean Brockman split the award, which hasn't happened since Bob Beatty coached Humboldt and Don Chesney coached Yorkton in 2003.

Cassan, still in his 20s and in his third year as a head coach in the league, led the Terriers to a 36-14-1-3 record this season.

Brockman has been an award winning coach for years with the Broncos. In what was expected to be a rebuild year after the Broncos made a run at the RBC Cup last season, he led them to a 36-14-2-2 record after losing some key players from last year.

SJHL Player of the Month

Nipawin's Tad Kozun was named the Player of the Month after notching nine goals and nine assists in 12 games. He helped the Hawks cinched the second spot in the Bauer Conference.

Matt Saunderson of Melfort was named the Defenceman of the Month. Saunderson was a key player in helping the Mustangs edge out La Ronge and make the playoffs. He had one goal and seven assists in 10 games in February.

Humboldt's Matt Hrynkiw was named the Goaltender of the Month. Hrynkiw is one of the most consistent players in the league. He was 5-2 in the final month with a goals-against average of 1.42 and a .946 save percentage.

The Rookie of the Month was Weyburn's Ty McLean. He ended the season with an eight-game point streak and had four goals and seven assists in 11 games during the month of February.
