A major golf tournament is in full swing here in Humboldt.
The provincial amateur and senior women's championships teed off at the Humboldt Golf Club yesterday and will run until tomorrow. Golfers from across the province were invited to attend, as long as they have a registered handicap. There are two tournaments ongoing - the amateur championship and a senior tournament for women over 55. Combined, there are about 30 entrants. As far as general manager Cam Koski knows, this is the first time the course has hosted a tournament of this kind.
"We expressed interest to Golf Saskatchewan, and they asked if we'd like to host the ladies' amateur," Koski said.
Koski thinks the golf course's unique design was one of the reasons that it was chosen to host the event. The course was only nine holes between 1944 and 2000, and the second set of nine is quite different from the first.
"The unique design of the golf course is what sets it apart," Koski said. "The front nine has open, big greens, while the back nine is enclosed in trees with smaller greens."
The course has been very wet recently, but Koski said the grounds crew has been working hard to keep everything dry in preparation for the tournament.
Koski is hoping the tournament will showcase what he considers the course's best asset.
"We probably have some of the best greens in Saskatchewan," he said. "That will keep people coming back."
