THE BATTLEFORDS - It looks to be a quiet weekend for a number of Battlefords-area hockey teams this weekend on the ice.

In U18 play, the Battlefords AAA Stars are off this weekend, but will be back in action Nov. 11 at Merlis Belsher Place against the Saskatoon Contacts. Their next home games are at 2 pm on Nov. 13 and 14 against Moose Jaw at the Access Communications Centre.

The Stars have a record of 3-8-0-2 this season so far, and are coming off a 6-1 defeat at home to the Prince Albert Mintos.

In female U18 action the Battlefords Sharks are also not in league action until next weekend as they take on Swift Current on Saturday and Sunday on the road. The Sharks have a 1-6-0-1 record so far this season.

Also not in action this weekend are teams in the senior Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League, but they will be back soon.

The league launches its 2021-22 campaign next weekend, starting Friday, Nov. 12 as the Meota Combines host the Spiritwood Timberwolves at 8 p.m. at Access Communications Centre.

The following night, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m., the Battleford Beaver Blues host the Maymont Settlers while the Maidstone Jets host Spiritwood.

Maidstone is an addition to the SPHL this year, while Glaslyn North Stars are taking a one year leave of absence. The Perdue Pirates are back in the league after taking a one year leave of absence, but in any event there was no hockey season for any of the teams in 2020-21 due to pandemic restrictions.

One of the local hockey teams that will be seeing league action this weekend is U18 AA Northwest Stars.

They host the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Access Communications Centre and then go to Unity on Sunday versus West Central.
