A pair of local sisters start in drag racing left one of them claiming the provincial championship.
Destiny Therres began racing this year after spending a number of years watching her grandfather, Kevin, race and decided that it was something she wanted to do.
Destiny credits Kevin as a big part of her successful opening season.
“He’s really important. He helps get our cars ready and he lines us up at the line so it would be hard without him.”
It was an incredible debut season for the youngster as well as she captured the provincial championship with ease.
She won the Junior Dragster Thunder Division championship by 281 points, nearly 100 points more than the next biggest provincial champion.
Her season got off to a slow start by her incredibly lofty standards as she picked up a second place finish.
She rattled off five wins in a row after that to open up a large gap in the standings.
Destiny fell back down to earth slightly in her next two races finishing in second place both times but ended the year on fire winning the final four races to lock up the championship.
Her incredible first season finished with nine first place finishes and three seconds in 12 starts.
“It was good. I didn’t think I was actually going to win anything that year but I won (the provincial championship).”
She said the biggest thing she had to learn this season was where to lift off the acceleration after the race was over.
Next year Destiny will move up to compete against her sister Desirea in the Junior Dragster Lightning Division.
This also marked the first year Desirea raced and decided to compete after finding out her sister wanted to.
“When she wanted to do it I was like I want to do it too.”
While her season did not go nearly as well as her sisters she still enjoyed some success in her first season racing against racers older than her as she picked up a second and two thirds in 11 starts.
She said she was happy with her first season and saw the successes as a confidence booster for the 2016 season.
“It’s been good I’ve met a lot of people at the track and it’s nice to know that I can keep up with them.”
She says having her grandfather as a crewmember has been really helpful because he shows her some of the mechanics behind the car, which she feels is very important.
“Then you get to know your car and it’s good to know how it feels and you can kind of tell what’s wrong or how it’s running.”
Destiny says he was a big help in the fundamentals of driving the car as well noting that he helped teach them with their takeoffs so they could get off the line as quickly as possible.
With Destiny making the move to lightning next season and the girls competing directly against each other, Destiny does not expect there to be too much of a rivalry between the two.
“Our goal is just to get first and second,” she said.
