Sask. finishes sixth in summer games medal standings

The 2013 Canada Summer Games came to an end over the weekend and Saskatchewan finished in the middle of the pack. The province's 51 total medals was good for sixth place, five behind fifth place Nova Scotia, the only province within reach.

The 2013 Canada Summer Games came to an end over the weekend and Saskatchewan finished in the middle of the pack.

The province's 51 total medals was good for sixth place, five behind fifth place Nova Scotia, the only province within reach.

Ontario dominated from start to finish, ending the games with an impressive 213 medals. Quebec's 172 was good for second. In third place was British Columbia with 122. Alberta was close behind with 118, followed by Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. Manitoba finished seventh with 35. New Brunswick had 16, for eighth best. Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador tied for ninth place with two each. In last, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut were each shutout.

The good news for Saskatchewan is it was able to improve on its 2009 total of 48 medals.

The gold medal count was as follows: Ontario, 95; Quebec, 53; British Columbia, 47; Alberta, 34; Nova Scotia, 16; Saskatchewan, eight; New Brunswick, five; Manitoba, three. Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories failed to strike gold.

North Battleford saw some of its own rise to the challenge of competing in the national event. Joe Gerlinsky won silver in the 2.4 metre para mix sailing event. It was the first sailing medal for Saskatchewan since 1999. Mikaela York set a personal best time in the 2,000 metre steeplechase, which was her goal going into the games, and finished 15th overall. Lindsay Reimer competed in five Special Olympics swimming events. She had two seventh place finishes along with 12th, eighth and 10th.

Saskatchewan had a number of athletes who won multiple medals. Lindsay Kinnear won two golds in the 100 and 200 metre Special Olympics female races. Sam Ryan won two golds and three silvers in multiple swimming events giving her more medals than five provinces and territories combined. Jessica Frotten won three bronze medals in wheelchair events.
