The first half of the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games wrapped up Wednesday with the alpine skiing, biathlon, gymnastics, male curling, male hockey, judo, speed skating, synchronized swimming, target shooting and weightlifting events all concluding.

The big result of the day for the host Rivers West team came in the male curling event as the rink consisting of Rosetown’s Cody Sutherland, Maidstone’s Doug Sroka, Maidstone’s Bruce Krepps and North Battleford’s Jack Reid earned a silver medal following a 6-4 affair in the championship game that was won by Daymond Bernath of Saskatoon.

Lloydminster’s Devrie Johnston also won a silver medal in the female -40 kg and -46 kg judo skills competition, which was her third medal of the week.

Cut Knife’s Nick Berotia picked up a silver medal in the 94 kg male weightlifting event, while North Battleford’s Noah Esquirol matched that feat in the male 94+ kg division

Through the opening three days, Rivers West sits fourth in the medal standings with 36 medals.

They’ve picked up 14 gold and silver medals each and have also won eight bronze medals.

Saskatoon leads the way with 61 medals with Regina in second with 43 and Prairie Central in third with 40.

One of the medals that Saskatoon picked up Wednesday was in the male hockey event as they defeated Prairie Central by a score of 6-4 to win the gold medal.
