Battlefords North Stars Head Coach and General Manager Kevin Hasselberg announced last week that 20-year-old defenceman Kyle Schmidt has been named the team captain for the 2013-14 season.
The six-foot tall, 200 pound defenceman from Waldheim was a member of the Memorial Cup host team Saskatoon Blades during the 2012-13 season. In 19 games played with the North Stars last season, Schmidt produced seven points, three of which came during the playoffs.
Schmidt began his junior career in the Western Hockey League splitting time between the Calgary Hitmen and the Blades. In 144 games played in the WHL, Schmidt accumulated 27 points and 121 penalty minutes.
Along with Schmidt being named captain, Hasselberg also announced that local Battlefords product Dillon Forbes along with Spencer Gosselin and Luke McColgan will serve as alternate captains.
Schmidt donned the "C" for the first time Friday when the team was in Yorkton to take on the Terriers.
