It has been a busy time for the broomball teams in Bruno.
The Senior Bruno Axemen will be headed to Nationals April 10-13 in Regina.
"We are going to put all our time into trying to win it," said coach Ray Bender. "It will be two games a day, usually at noon and six. You are busy."
They earned the right to play in Nationals last year by winning the Provincial Championship.
This year, there are three teams from Saskatchewan headed to the event.
"There are three teams from Saskatchewan this year because you have a host team and the provincial champion team and sometimes if they are looking for an extra team, you get first choice," said Bender. "We won Provincials again this year so next year we get to go to Nationals in Calgary."
This year, there are two Quebec teams, two Ontario teams, three Saskatchewan and one from Alberta at Nationals.
He is excited about the opportunity for his team.
"Since I started coaching here in 1990, we have won 16 provincial championships," said Bender. "We've been to Nationals probably 18 out of the 23 years we've been going."
The Bruno Axemen have won Nationals three times in 23 years and hope to increase that number this year.
"We will definitely go to try and win it," said Bender.
He explained although they hope to win, they will be up against some stiff competition.
"They are all strong teams," said Bender. "Anybody can beat anybody. There is no easy team there. Some years there is but not the last few years, it is all strong competition. Every game will be a tough one. There are no easy ones."
Although the Senior team is just headed to Nationals, the Junior Axemen came home after a long National tournament in Cornwall, Ontario.
The team did not do very well, winning only one game of the seven games they played. They went to the B-final for their seventh game, which they lost to the Windsor Devils.
