Senior men's soccer set for playoffs

The final game of the regular season had Sweetgrass Light up against the FC Elite Thursday night. Depending on the result of the final game of the regular season, three teams, Sweetgrass Light, FC Elite and Athletica had a shot at first place in the Battlefords Senior Men's Soccer League.

Sweetgrass got out to a 2-0 lead and appeared to have the game well under control until late in the first half. FC Elite's Chad Stewart headed in a ball to make it a 2-1 game heading into the second half.

Early in the second half, FC Elite came out strong and drew a free kick after Kelly Halter was taken down in the box. He made no mistake with his kick, as he beat the FC Elite goalie to tie the game.

Minutes later, Stewart kicked in a rebound to give FC Elite their first lead of the game.

FC Elite's goalie kept his team in front 3-2 with a beautiful diving save later in the second half, but Sweetgrass refused to quit.

With nearly 26 minutes left in the game, Shalen Fox scored his first of two goals with a strike to the top corner.

FC Elite were looking to respond and retake the lead, but Halter hit the cross bar when he was in alone on an open net and that appeared to be the turning point of the game.

Sweetgrass chipped the ball in seven minutes after the FC Elite miss and again five minutes after that to go up 5-3.

In the final minutes, Sweetgrass Light sealed the victory with one last goal and they locked up first place.

Along with Fox's two goals, Lance Moosomin scored twice for Sweetgrass while Clarence Moosomin and Courtney Adams had one goal each.

The men's quarter-final playoffs were set for Tuesday night. On the women's side their quarter-finals were played Monday. Both leagues were scheduled to play the semi finals and Wednesday and the finals will be played Thursday.
