The Battlefords Sharks are finding themselves competitive in a lot more games in SFMAAAHL action this year. The team dropped two contests over the weekend to Weyburn by 3-2 and 4-1 counts.

The Battlefords Sharks are still fighting to get into the "W" column despite keeping it close against the Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings.

They dropped 3-2 and 4-1 decisions in two back-to-back weekend home games at Battleford Arena, dropping the Sharks to 0-5-1 to begin the season.

Despite the losses, the Sharks continue to show improvement in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Sharks were competitive in both games and had a chance to win the first one, but paid the price for slow starts in each of the contests against Weyburn.

Saturday night, Caitlin Dempsey put the Sharks in a hole early with two first-period goals including one on the power play, for a 2-0 lead after one.

In the second, Julie Bowerman scored from Taylor Durocher to cut it to 2-1, but Tessa Wilson scored from Dempsey and Whitney Thorp to make it 3-1.

The Sharks got a shorthanded goal with 18 seconds left in the period when Shania Rhinehart scored with Rachel Trach getting the assist. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the scoring for the night. A power play opportunity for the Sharks late in the third period fizzled out, and the Wings came away with the 3-2 victory.

Despite a close final score, the Sharks were heavily outshot 41 to 16, which meant a busy night for Jacy Akre in net for the full 60 minutes.

Sunday, it was a bit of an easier afternoon for the Gold Wings as they beat Battlefords by a 4-1 count. Goals from Wilson and Marissa Pirlot put the Wings up 2-0 after one, and an unassisted marker from Bailee Bourassa had the Sharks down 3-0 after two.

In the third, Mallory Roy scored from Laura Harper early on in the period to make it a 3-1 contest, but Brooke Patron's goal with just over six minutes remaining rounded out the scoring as Weyburn cruised to victory.

Shots on goal were 37-22 for Weyburn, with Sharks' netminder Akre again facing the lions share of pressure in goal. She stopped 33 of 37 shots on the day.

Weyburn is now 4-3-0-2 for 10 points, good for fourth place in the eight-team SFMAAAHL, as the league wraps up play for the month of October.
