The Battlefords AAA Sharks' finished the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League in eighth place, but during the final month of the regular season they had arguably the league's best player.
February's first star of the month honour was awarded to Sharks' goalie Jacy Akre. She led the league in minutes played and shots faced significantly ahead of all the other goaltenders in the league and main reason the Sharks were able to stay close in games when they played with a shortened roster of 10 players.
Akre played 26 games in her second season in the league earning one win, while posting an .888 save percentage after facing 1,113 shots.
Akre appears to be following in the footsteps of former Sharks' goalie Tehnille Gard, who graduated from the Sharks and went on to play college hockey in Alberta. Ashley Kuechle, another former Sharks goalie, was one of the busier goalies in the league during her career as well and the backbone of the Sharks from 2006 to '09.
Akre has demonstrated a strong commitment to the game and her team by bringing a highly competitive approach to all of her appearances.
Akre is eligible to play in the SMAAAHL next season. Along with the players looking ahead to next year, so too is the Sharks' board as the deadline for coaching applications is March 31 for the 2012-13 season.
