The Battlefords Sharks took on the Melville Fox FM Prairie Fire in back-to-back road games Saturday and Sunday to open their season.

Led by forward Mallory Roy, the Sharks were able to split the weekend set.

In game one, Melville had a hefty advantage in shots from start to finish. The game ended with the Prairie Fire putting 37 pucks on net to the Sharks' 21. However, a strong performance by goaltender Jamie Powers kept the game close. The rookie was playing in her first game and, after spending Thursday and Friday in the hospital, the strong performance kept her team in the game. Powers made 34 saves and was named the game's second star.

The lone goal for the Sharks was scored by Roy, who is leading the league in goals early in the season. Latashea Frohlich and Jetta Derenoski earned assists.

It was all Roy in game two as she almost single-handedly led her team to victory. Roy scored a goal in each period to bring her to four goals on the weekend, two ahead of the next leading scorers.

Morgan Fraser had the other goal for the Sharks, who went on to win 4-2. Powers was in net again for game two and, once again, had a strong game in the crease. She stopped 24 of the 26 shots on goal en route to her first win.

The other point-getters for the Sharks were: Keinyn Nordell, Jesse Starr, Laura Harper and Derenoski, whose two assists in two games tie her for third place in points in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Sharks hit the ice again Oct. 12 in their home opener when they take on Prince Albert, who have won their first two games of the season in overtime.
