SJHL Players of Week, power rankings unveiled

The Yorkton Terriers once again stand atop the Source Embroidery and Screenprinting Power Rankings in the SJHL.

In the rankings released Dec. 10, the Terriers stood first at 21-7-0-1 for 43 points, ahead of the second-ranked Notre Dame Hounds with a record of 18-8-0-3. Yorkton is being credited for having the longest winning streak of the season so far.

The Bauer-leading Flin Flon Bombers are ranked third with a 21-9 record, followed by Humboldt, Melville and Nipawin.

Right now the Battlefords North Stars stand seventh in the SJHL Power Rankings, on the heels of a recent five-game winning streak, followed up by a three-game losing streak before they turned it around with 5-2 thumping of Melfort Friday.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves moved up slightly from ninth to eighth in the rankings while Weyburn moved up to ninth. Melfort took the biggest drop, down to tenth in the power rankings after their recent two-game slide, while Estevan and Kindersley round out the rankings this week.

Among those players listed as "Who's Hot" in the league this week are ?Curtis Martinu of Estevan (2-1, 1.67, .951)?for back to back shutouts in net; ??Michael Salmon of Notre Dame (2-1, 1.34, .937)?, backup netminder for the Hounds; Giovanni Bombini of Kindersley (4-2-5-7)? noted for looking more and more comfortable as the season goes along; Christian Magnus of Melville (2-4-2-6); Graham Smerek of La Ronge (5-4-6-10) for his offensive skill; Patrick Martens of Yorkton (4-3-6-9), noted for being the Terriers' top forward over the last several games; and his teammate??Brady Norrish (4-2-5-7).

Announced as well were the CANALTA SJHL Players of the Week for the week ended Dec. 9.

The SJHL Player of the Week is the Klippers' Giovanni Bombini, who had two three-point outings last week including a one-goal, two-assist effort Saturday over the Melville Millionaires, finishing with two goals and five assists in four games played. For the season, Bombini has 13 goals and 15 assists in 27 games.

The SJHL Defenceman of the Week is Brady Norrish of the Yorkton Terriers. Norrish got two goals and two assists in a Terriers' win over Kindersley.

The SJHL Rookie of the Week is?Shaun MacPherson of Kindersley, who collected a goal and three assists in four games played last week, registering at least a point in three of the four games. In last Saturday's game versus Melville MacPherson was noted for setting up the early second period power play marker and then getting the winner in overtime.

Goaltender of the week honours go to Estevan's Curtis Martinu who had back-to-back shutouts last week, ending up with a 2 and 1 record and a 1.67 GAA to go with a .951-save percentage. Martinu recorded 42 saves against Notre Dame last Tuesday and 33 on Friday against Humboldt.
