Skate Humboldt hosted their year-end skating show on Mar. 13 where the skaters were able to show off the skills that they learned throughout the year.

This year the club had a theme of shining bright, said President, Troy Lucyshyn. He said the them came from the idea that everyone should show off their capabilities and everyone has the ability to perform, they just need to be given the chance to.

Part of the theme was specially picked music to compliment the skaters including Roar by Katy Perry, which Lucyshyn says was about just doing it, Born This Way, which was just about accepting themselves for the way that they are and just doing the best that they can. Another was Disney classic Hakuna Matata, which Lucyshyn says ties into the theme by accepting life the way it is and performing and doing the best they can. Don’t Worry Be Happy, and Stand By You, which were intended to show that no matter how things go for someone everyone should be there for their friends and shine along the way.

Lucyshyn says the ice show is important for the skaters because it teaches them about being empowered and it gives them an opportunity to put a wrap on their season.

“The kids need to conclude and show off what they’re capable of to the parents, a lot of parents in the background, grandparents out there. It’s really kind of like the final test because the kids have to work toward something.”

Lucyshyn was very pleased with how the ice show turned out calling it phenomenal, saying that they tried a number of new elements at their show including having a new backdrop and putting lights on the boards for the first time. In addition to those elemental changes Lucyshyn says they also altered the way the show went with CanSkate skaters receiving their report cards on the ice as well as moving the awards ceremony to the beginning of the show.

Putting together a show like this takes a lot of hard work and a lot of volunteers and sponsors, says Lucyshyn.

“Without these guys it would not even be remotely possible… also very important is the support of all the sponsors all the various different organizations in the town such as Scotiabank, which provided a lot of the funding… it costs a lot of money to run a program like this and it wouldn’t be possible from the coaches, everything that we need to purchase to make it happen.”

Lucyshyn wanted to thank all the sponsors and volunteers for making the season a successful one.
