It might have been a Hard Knock Life for the Skate Humboldt skaters but they were Sparkling Diamonds and All That Jazz for their performances at their Salute to Broadway show on March 18.

Performances ranged from the youngest CanSkate students up to the StarSkaters.

One young skater was injured during the performance to which the Humboldt and District Ambulance Service was called in.

Larry Durand with Skate Humboldt said she is recovering fine.

Skate Humboldt President Amanda Schlachter says that 68 CanSkaters and 21 StarSkaters took to the ice this year, as well as 77 CanPower Skate also taking part in preparing themselves for the hockey season.

Many of the older skaters were also helpers with the CanSkate groups for their dance performances.

The StarSkaters will be going until April with tests coming up with skating judge Wendy Toye.

Some StarSkaters also competed in the regional competition in Fort Qu’Appelle in January.

Schlachter says that the younger StarSkaters that went did very well.

Two skaters also went to a competition in Swift Current, both doing very well as well, says Schlachter.

A great group of volunteers made things like getting costumes and the Elgar Petersen Arena ready easy with coaches and students getting a ton of help.

CanSkate is for children aged 3-10 learning everything from stopping, getting up and down, and backwards skating.

CanPower focuses on hockey drill skating skills without a stick. CanPower runs from August to October.

StarSkate takes their skating to the next level with the students learning the same jumps and spins that people would have recently seen at the Olympics combining skating with the ice dance aspects, says Schlachter.

“We have some girls that really love doing the dances,” says Schlachter.
