Three Humboldt Broncos players were awarded $500 scholarships on Sept. 21 during the St. Peter's College Award Ceremony. The awards were based on academic achievement and a written essay on the importance of education to hockey players.
The three players were Gregory Moro, 17, Jeffrey Ness, 19, and Dylan Fluter, 19. All three boys were also publicly recognized at the Humboldt Broncos home opener on Sept. 21.
"I just found out yesterday," said Moro. "I was pretty excited. I told my mom and my family straight away, but otherwise I mainly kept quiet."
Moro's essay focused on the importance of having a back-up plan and obtaining an education in case of injury or for when a hockey player chooses to retire.
"I found out last week. I got an email saying we won," said Ness. "It's always helpful to get extra money for books and classes. It's always good to be recognized that way."
While technically still a first-year student, Ness did attend classes at St. Peter's College last year. His essay centered on the role education plays in changing social perceptions about hockey players and being a role model for kids both athletically and academically.
"I found out about a week ago. I was so excited and grateful," said Fluter. "I texted my parents and then I think I texted Jeff. I felt really good and really proud."
Fluter's parents live in Saskatoon, but Fluter travels to Humboldt to attend classes during the week. His essay concentrated on his own personal experience and self-evolution towards higher academic achievement.
The scholarship is awarded on behalf of St. Peter's College and the Humboldt Broncos.
All three boys have been playing hockey for the last 12-14 years. They all agree that should the opportunity arise, they will pursue a career in hockey.
