Special teams a factor in Midget Stars pre-season game

You could say if there weren't any penalties called Tuesday night in the game between the Battlefords Midget Stars and Beardy's Blackhawks it would have been much less exciting.

The Stars and Blackhawks faced off in pre-season action where the Blackhawks won 5-3. Of the eight goals scored at the Civic Centre five came with at least one player in the penalty box.

The first period was an aggressive period with 16 penalties called. The Stars scored twice on the powerplay, the first on a beautiful three-way passing play capped off by Joel Blaquiere. Carter Danczak and Brody Tatchell had the assists.

The Stars second goal came late in the first period when Drew Soderberg deflected a shot from the high slot off the back cross bar. Brock Weston and Ashton Clark had the helpers on that powerplay goal.

Elliott Peterson and Brett Boyd scored for Beardy's in the first. Peterson's goal came 43 seconds into the game while Boyd's goal was scored four minutes later on the powerplay.

In the second, it was all Beardy's as they scored three goals, one on the powerplay and another shorthanded. Peterson, Ryan Pilon and Austin Andrusiak were the Blackhawks' second period goal scorers.

Kihisis Derocher scored for the Stars in the third period, but it was enough. The Stars lost their second exhibition game of the season to fall to 1-2. The exhibition season continued Thursday in Saskatoon against the Contacts and will wrap up Saturday at the Civic Centre at 7:30 p.m.

Both Blair Mahon and Nigel Rempel saw time in the Stars' net.

The evaluation process continues for Lorne Nielson and his assistant coach Lee Ulmer, as once again the Stars were without three of their top veteran forwards in Regan Yew, Blake Young and Zach Klebaum.
