1973 - Basketball great Wilt Chamberlain plays his final National Basketball Association game. He retired with 31,419 career regular season points in 1,045 games.

1989 - The first Soviet hockey players are permitted to play in the National Hockey League. Viacheslav Fetisov leads a group, which includes Vladimir Krutov, Igor Larionov, Sergei Makarov, Sergei Mylinkov, Sergei Praikin, Helmut Balderis and Sergei Starikov.
1996 - Art Modell announces the move of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore where the Ravens are born.

1940 - Indiana University beats Kansas 60-42 in the second National Collegiate Athletic Association's men's basketball championship.

1973 - In a 12-round split decision, Ken Norton defeats Muhammad Ali in heavyweight boxing. Norton broke Ali's jaw in the fight and it was the second professional loss for Ali.
1991 - The St. Louis Blues' Brett Hull scored his 86th goal of the season making him the third highest single season goal scorer in NHL history. Hull had three consecutive seasons with 70 goals or more.
1998 - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays played their first Major League Baseball game at Tropicana Field in Petersburg, Fla. The Devil Rays lost 11-6 to the Detroit Tigers, but Wade Boggs hit the first home run in franchise history.

1919 - The Stanley Cup final series between the Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Metropolitans is suspended and never completed. After both teams won twice and tied, the sixth and final game was cancelled due to an outbreak of influenza. Canadiens' defenceman Joe Hall passed away four days later.
1938 - The Baseball Hall of Fame opens in Copperstown, N.Y.
1980 - Wayne Gretzky breaks Bobby Orr's NHL record with his 103rd and 104th assists in one season. Gretzky would go on to have 11 consecutive seasons of 102 assists or more.

1931 - Female pitcher Jackie Mitchell of the Chattanooga Lookouts strikes out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back. She was one of the first female professional baseball players and started her career at 17.
1977 - The Montreal Canadiens set an NHL record of 34-straight home games without a loss.
1980 - Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky becomes the first teenagers to score 50 goals in an NHL season. It was his second season with Oilers and first for the team in the NHL.

1983 - South California beats L.A. Tech 69-67 in the second NCAA women's basketball championship.
1987 - Bill Elliot sets a NASCAR qualifying record with a mark of 212.809 miles per hour at Talladega.
1988 - Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux ends Wayne Gretzky's seven year reign as the NHL's top scorer. Lemieux finished the season with 70 goals and 98 assists in 77 games.
