With nominations over, the Humboldt Sports Hall of Fame is ready to welcome this year's selection of athlete inductees.
Four individuals and one team were chosen this year and range in a variety of sports from track and field to curling, to bowling. In no particular order, they are as follows:
David Wassill: Wassill was involved in 16 different high school sport leagues, succeeding in tackle football, volleyball, hockey, track, and badminton. Among a few of his high school accomplishments, he won a long jump event that still holds the provincial record in grade 9-10 Saskatchewan Athletics Provincial Records. During his postsecondary school life, he was a bronze Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) finalist in pole vaulting and was an assistant coach for jumps and throws for a year. Following university, he went on to compete in various provincial and national competitions, including the 1991 Pan Am Games. Wassill continued his athletic pursuits by becoming involved in several different sports clubs and associations.
Allan Becker: Becker is one of four youngsters in 1970 to form a high school curling team. In three years, the Humboldt Collegiate Boys Team would pass district plays, regionals, and provincials to make it all the way to the national competition in Moncton, N.B. Though they lost to Manitoba (leaving Ontario and Quebec to compete), they still finished in third place.
Brendan Witt: Witt is a former professional hockey defenceman who played for the Washington Capitals, Nashville Predators, and New York Islanders in the NHL.
Ostap "Ozzie" Zary: Zary was active in bowling, track and field, and softball. He helped implement the Youth Bowling Council implementation in Humboldt between the late 1960s and 1980s. He also coached and was a member of the 1977 Team Saskatchewan that wont he first ever Canadian Masters Bowling Championship title in the teaching division.
At heart, however, he was a track and field athlete. He was particular good at sprinting and hurdles and worked extensively as a volunteer official and instructor.
Bruno Axemen Broomball Club: Having thrived for 25 years, the broomball club has won 17 provincial titles and three national championships. During one of those championships, the team won 35 of the 37 games.
The inductees will be made official at the Sports Hall of Fame inductee dinner on Nov. 10 at Jubilee Hall.
